![]() Additionally, a fluid or non-existing sex/gender attribution is the most likely for non-adults younger than 15 years old. Through an exhaustive statistical analysis of the archaeological and osteological data set, the existence of some clear differences among social adults (>16 years old) can be identified in terms of social ranking and sex/gender markers, within a complex and non-binary structure. Therefore, in this study, 70 individuals with associated Bell Beaker grave-goods buried in 37 tombs from the main territories of Iberia have been analysed. The Bell Beaker phenomenon, despite being one of the most discussed topics in archaeology, has never been approached from this perspective. The binary and opposed division into two sexes and genders, the heterosexuality as a naturalized ideal or the nuclear family, are just some examples. Queer theory has always questioned the uncritical transposition into the past of the categories linked with the heteronormative sex/gender system of the contemporary Western society. This is calculated using “reference data” drawn from a sample of individuals for whom both these ages are known. While the link between social and chronological age depends on each society and on the legislation in force, the link between biological age indicators and chronological age can only be defined through statistical correlation. These outliers must be taken into account, so we cannot be certain that a child with a toothless smile is between 5 and 7 years old. For example, most children lose their first milk teeth between ages 5 and 7, although some lose them earlier, and some later. While individuals grow and age at different speeds, these processes remain circumscribed within a clearly defined pattern of evolution, and a reliable statistical link can be established between life stage and chronological age. For example, within just a few generations, the mean age at puberty has decreased and growth processes have accelerated in response to recent improvements in diet, hygiene and medical care. It is less closely associated with the type of society than social age, but may be strongly affected by individual living conditions. ![]() children and adolescents), or on senescence for adults. It varies considerably across individuals, however, as it is based on biological growth indicators for immature subjects (i.e. ![]() Biological age is a different measure of the time between birth and the moment of observation. Hence, adolescents in some countries may be considered as adults at a young age, entitled by law to engage in adult activities involving early exposure to certain adult risks (military service, employment, early childbearing, etc.). Today, the age of civil majority ranges from 15 to 21 years across the world. Under Roman law, girls reached their majority at age 12 and boys at age 14, while in France, under the Ancien Régime, these ages were 25 and 30, respectively. For example, the age of civil majority is a key social age which varies from one society to another. This age, with its corresponding rights and duties, is a relative measure that depends on individuals’ personal perceptions of the continuities or discontinuities of their life, and on social perceptions of the stages that make up the life cycle. Social age is a reflection of the place occupied by an individual at a particular point in time within the society to which he/she belongs. However, while the notion of age as the time that elapses between a person’s birth and the phenomenon under study appears obvious to us today, it may encompass a number of different realities, depending on the individual, the time and the place concerned. Its use as a variable of choice for the analysis of all demographic phenomena suggests that chronological age is the determinant of all demographic behaviours. Chronological age is a key quantitative variable that has been exploited by demographers since a link between mortality and age was first established more than three centuries ago.
